Breville Dual Boiler and Oracle: you need 58mm

Short answer: if you own a Breville Dual Boiler, Oracle, Oracle Touch or Oracle Jet, you need 58mm accessories. Not 54mm.

This one catches people because "Breville accessories" almost always means 54mm. The Bambino and Barista range is 54mm, so that's what most shops stock and most guides describe. The machines below are the exception, and none of that gear fits them.

Which Breville machines take 58mm

Breville's own replacement portafilter assembly for these machines is listed as a single 58mm part covering all four, which is the clearest confirmation you'll find.

Which Breville machines take 54mm

Everything else in the consumer range: Bambino, Bambino Plus, Barista Express, Barista Express Impress, Barista Pro, Barista Touch and Infuser. How to check in ten seconds

Look at the model number on the base or the back of the machine. If it starts BES9, you're 58mm. If it starts BES8 or it's a Bambino, you're 54mm.

If the sticker has worn off, measure the inside diameter of your filter basket with a ruler. A 58mm basket is visibly larger, and the portafilter is noticeably heavier than a Barista Express one.

What happens if you buy 54mm by mistake

Nothing seats. A 54mm basket drops straight through a 58mm portafilter, a 54mm dosing funnel won't sit on the rim, and a 54mm tamper leaves a wide ring of untamped coffee around the edge of the puck. That ring is a channel, and it's why the shot comes out fast, pale and sour.

The one thing that does still work either way is a tamping mat, a knock box or a barista brush — nothing about those depends on portafilter size.

What fits your machine

A note on group head ears

58mm is the basket size, not a guarantee of fit. Group head ears vary between brands — an E61 portafilter from one manufacturer can bind on another machine even at the same diameter. Our 58mm portafilter lists the machines it's designed for on its product page. If yours isn't named, ask us before ordering. We'd rather answer an email than process a return.
