Adjustable Depth Tamper

There's no dial on a tamper. You press, and you hope you pressed the same as yesterday. This one has an adjustable collar that rests on the rim of your basket and stops at the depth you set, so every puck comes out flat and consistent — no matter how tired you are before your first coffee.

Choosing a size

• 51mm: most DeLonghi machines (Dedica, Stilosa and similar)
• 53mm: Breville / Sage 54mm portafilters (Bambino, Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Infuser)
• 58mm: Gaggia Classic, Rancilio Silvia, Lelit, ECM, Profitec and most prosumer machines

A Breville machine takes a 53mm tamper, not 54mm. The portafilter is 54mm but the basket bore is about 53mm, and the tamper goes inside the basket. Ordering 54mm is the most common mistake Breville owners make — here's why the two numbers differ.

Questions people ask

Is this for beginners? Yes. A depth-stopped tamper removes the one variable that's hardest to learn by feel.

How hard should I press? With this tamper, it barely matters — the collar stops you at the same depth regardless, which is the whole point.

Will it fix my spraying shots? A crooked tamp is one of the three causes. Reading a bottomless shot covers the other two.
